A look back in time

Richly decorated tombs can be found all over North Korea, and they represent a unique legacy of the ancient Korean civilization known as the Koguryo. With their preservation of the traditions, values, and way of life of a bygone era, these burial sites are comparable to time capsules.

The design of the Koguryo tombs is one of their most striking features. Constructed with a unique framework resembling a mushroom, these tombs are accentuated by the grassy surroundings. The exterior walls are decorated with elaborate murals that show celestial beings, mythical animals, and everyday scenes. Beyond their artistic talents, the murals also showcase the unique culture and beliefs of the Koguryo people.
